The Kilim carpet is a hand-woven wool carpet made in Afghanistan. Kilims (often called kelims) are flat woven rugs based on the traditions of nomadic peoples, but became very popular and industrially produced in the twentieth century. The carpet is rectangular in shape. Geometric shapes form a pattern that progresses towards the centre in irregular stripes. The outlines of the forms are abstracted and 'blurred' in a way typical of kilim weaving. The carpet is in very good original condition.
